I’m from New York, the home of the spitters. The only place and people that spit like it’s cool. I would guess would spit more than New Yorkers is Texans and those gosh darn cowboys. But, here in New York we spit but why do we spit so much? Let me explain.

One of the most well known reason why New Yorker spit is to get rid of someone. Their is a famous line from the New York native DMX. It goes “when you see me spit at you, you know I am trying to get rid of you.” That immortal verse in one of his popular songs caused people to spit at people they don’t like.

People will literally spit in your direction much like a lizard would. They spit at you to keep you 6 feet away or farther. Spitting is a common reason to keep people at a strong distance away from any and everybody. Hell, I even spit and got my wife to spit at people we don’t like, and she’s not even from New York Bity. Spitting is a common way to keep people at a distance.

Another reason why people spit is to be respectful. Respectfully people here in New York at least choose to be disrespectful to show respect. In a way, it’s a New Yorker’s way of saying namaste. In a sense, they are saying “The gangsta in me respects the gangster in you, so stay away from this gangsta-ish.” The legendary rapper Jay-Z was quoted saying “Sometimes you have to be disrespectful to get respect.” When Jay-Z said this the hood went crazy with disrespectful antics of rude behavior.

Another reason why people spit is the simplest most honest reason, they generally just have to spit. Look, New York in a dirty, polluted city. People get sick and just have to spit. They might have a smokers cough, just morning phlegm either way they have to let some mucus out, so they spit it out.

Most of the time it have nothing to do with respect or hatred. We just have to spit, most will look bashful after spitting. We have feeling and don’t want to offend anybody but we have to spit. We get sick too and we need to let one loose. It has nothing to do with the rap game we just are feeling under the weather. Sometimes we will even apologize.

Their are a lot of reasons why people spit, is it rude and sometimes uncalled for? Yes, but we are humans too, and sometimes it is just the culture of our city. One thing I can say no matter how disrespectful or hated I felt, no one ever spit directly in my face. We are New Yorkers but we are not animals. So we try not to go to certain extremes. We may be rude at times but we aren’t that bad where we are ready to spit in somebody’s face.

Form being sickness to gangsta we have reasons for our actions. There is a method to our madness. Here in New York everything we do has a reason and we rarely make mistakes. Spitting is a big part of our culture and from being disrespectful to being sick we spit, so please excuse our phlegm and stay 6″ft away!
